Isaac's Black Eye & The Pointy-Foreheaded Kid

Last week Isaac came home from school sporting a shiner on his right eye.  I tried to get a picture, but you can't really see it that well.

Isaac, how did you get that black eye?

Some pointy-foreheaded kid hit me in the eye while we were playing football.

isaac: "i thought so. it's tie and mount like mount everest."

a little boy's thought process

yesterday, i had the occasion to explain to the two boys, in terms that they could understand, what a placenta is and what placenta previa is. i also explained that because the placenta is in the way, the doctors would most likely have to cut my stomach open to get the baby out. jared asked if it would hurt and i said that they would make it so that it wouldn't hurt me.

after a minute of contemplation, isaac asked, "are they going to shoot you with a sleeping dart?"

in the car this morning

on the way to drop the girls off at preschool. i was a silent observer - this exchange is between the two little ones in the back seat.

amelia - you know, my mom's baby doesn't have a toy in there.
marissa - i know.
amelia - so i can share my toys when her comes out.
marissa - you can share your toys and she'll put them in her mouth.
amelia - except i don't want her to chew on them.
marissa - well, she won't have any teeth yet until later.

it's a girl

found out at my ultrasound this past monday that we are going to be blessed with another baby girl. i was so excited! truly, it wouldn't have mattered either way, but it will be fun to do the girl thing again - plus the nerd in me is very excited about the even numbers!!!!

the baby looks great and is due on september 14th, which is my original due date. this is the only pregnancy that my due date hasn't changed after the ultrasound.

so what were the other kids' reactions?

well, isaac has been wanting a boy since we told him i was pregnant - only so we could name him "bob". don't ask me where that came from. he said, "i'm not too disappointed, because we'll have 3 girls and 3 boys and that make things equal." i busted up at the "not too disappointed" part. seriously, where does he come up with this stuff? he sounded so grown up.

amelia and jared both wanted another girl so they were excited. amelia was excited because "i get to share my toys with the baby and i get to share my room." we'll see how long her excitement with sharing lasts!

finally.... here is a picture of me at 20 weeks. i know the picture isn't that great. jared took it with my phone. i thought about scanning in one of the ultrasound pictures, but i feel a little weird about that for some reason. do you think i am being weird?

miss amelia

in the car on the way to preschool...

amelia: mom, how do you say tree in spanish?
me: i'm not sure.

amelia: mom, how do you say wood in spanish?
me: i don't know - you need to ask daddy.

amelia: mom, how do you say tree in spanish?
me: mia, i don't know!

amelia (totally frustrated now): what, did you lose your mind or somethin'????

1st grade creative writing assignment

i think nathan and i need to work with isaac on creative thinking and imagination a little bit.

i was going through the boys' backpacks tonight to make sure everything was taken out of them. i came across some random halloween items and then came across isaac's thanksgiving creative writing assignment.

nathan and i couldn't stop laughing! i am sure that he read the prompt and just thought... "well duh!" and that was the end of that!

jared - mom, how do the people on the bottom of the earth not fall off the earth?

yesterday's funny

nathan and i went to parent teacher conferences last night for the boys. jared's teacher told us that he and a girl in the class get along quite well and that they hang out all the time.

when we got home, nathan asked jared if he liked her. jared's reply.... "Dad, I don't know what it is... I just like girls who look good."

Oh boy... i think we need to work with him on what's on the inside is important too.

the utes

anyone who knows the harwood family, know that nathan is a true blue cougar football fan. he has taught the boys that blue means byu and red means utah.

the other night, i had the boys on the lds church's friend website (which by the way is really cool - online coloring, videos, music, etc).

anyway, isaac and jared were coloring a picture of jesus online. in order to make it look right, jared took one of our jesus pictures off the wall so they could be sure the colors were all correct.

a few minutes later, jared says to me "i think jesus likes utah because he is wearing red."

oh isaac.... i could eat you up

each night while i make dinner, the boys do their homework at the counter. jared usually has real homework of reading and a few worksheets, but i have printed out a bunch that i got online for isaac. last wednesday, when we finished isaac's homework, he wanted to put it in his backpack to give to his teacher. I at first tried to get him to put in on the pantry door to display (i can only imagine how many random pieces of paper these teachers get each year), but then i decided he could take it and probably end up bringing it home.

friday he came home from school and the papers weren't in his backpack, so i asked if he had given them to his teacher. the conversation went close to this:

me: did you give your papers to Mrs. Heap?
isaac: yeah, her says i could keep them.
me: so did you keep them; were are they?
isaac: no, i said her could keep them.
me: what did she say?
isaac: her said thank you.
me: that was nice.
isaac: her's in love with me.

kids say the.....

last saturday, nathan and i were going to take the kids to our church sponsored fall festival. we had told the kids that there would be fun games and yummy food. it was supposed to be held at an outdoor amphitheater.
we drove to the amphitheater and found that the activity had been moved to to the stake center because of the rain. as we were driving to the church building, jared was a little upset and said that he didn't want to go to the church because all they had to eat was bread and water.

it's official... i am getting old

this is the random darth vader cake that he wanted. he has never shown any interest in the man before this cake.
my jared celebrated his 6th birthday on august 15th and he starts kindergarten next tuesday and i am turning 30 in two months. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
jared's birthday was a fun day. we went to seven peaks waterpark with shane and roni and their kids. then we had cake and ice cream later than night with the grandparents. jared is so excited to be getting older and to start school.
this morning after he had sat in time out for hitting isaac, i told him that he was responsible for his own actions and his own feelings and he needed to learn that there were acceptable ways to express those feelings. His response was, "I am not in charge. You said you are in charge of me, you're the boss."

i love my children.

like monkeys.... or hyenas.... or ....

Lately, the boys have been acting like .....

The first offense. While Sylvia that sitter was there, they went into the backyard, turned on the hose and got soaking wet. Getting wet is not a big deal. But then they took off their clothes, made a big mud puddle with the water and painted each other from head to toe with the mud. Sylvia soon discovers the mudfest and brings the boys into the house and cleans them up. When Nathan gets home he talks to them about what is appropriate outside and what is not (getting naked, painting each other with mud, etc.). He puts them into time out for a while.

The second offense. Not too long after the first offense, Nathan comes home to find Sylvia standing at the sliding glass door that leads to the backyard. She tells Nathan that the boys are outside playing in the water, completely soaked and they won't come in and she cannot go out there and get them. Nathan asks why she can't go out side and she tells him that every time she opens the door, the boys try to squirt her with the water. Nathan goes outside, the boys scatter because dad means business. Nathan cleans them up and they sit in their room for the rest of the night for playing in the water again and trying to squirt the babysitter.

The third offense. If anyone needs their garage floor painted, I have helpers. Yes, Nathan came home one day to find the boys in the garage, painting. They got out a can of paint, somehow managed to get the lid off the can of paint and then painted the floor of the garage as well as some tile we had out there. They claimed to be painting a wooden box we had made for Jared a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully, they didn't get paint all over themselves, just all over the garage. They spent the majority of the evening in their room and then had to scrape as much of the paint off as they could.

Of course they have never been perfect little angels but why all of sudden are they behaving so extremely? I know.... they are probably bored and, although we love Syvlia to death, she really doesn't discipline the kids. Now I know that this is probably normal behavior for little boys, but I was a perfect child, I am certain. I don't deserve this type of aggravation.
