3 Good Things – A Gratitude Journal Experience Inspired by The Happiness Advantage (REPOST)

Several months ago I wrote a post on my company blog.  Since it is more personal in nature, I've decided to post it here on my blog as well.  You can find the original post, here.
Gratitude Journal, Happiness Advantage, The Happiness Project, Shawn Achor, Good Things, Things to be grateful for, Good things in life, Data-Driven Marketing
Recently I finished reading The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor.  A couple of the main points I took from the reading were, “…happiness is the precursor to success, not merely the result” and “… success orbits around happiness, not the other way around.”  Although individually we may define success in different terms, it is likely that we all search for and desire success and happiness in some form.  Achor outlines a high number of tools and principles we may use to attain more happiness, but I want to focus on one of the best, gratitude.
“Countless … studies have shown that consistently grateful people are more energetic, emotionally intelligent, forgiving, and less likely to be depressed, anxious, or lonely.”

Practicing Gratitude

How do we begin to practice gratitude in our everyday lives, especially if the practice seems foreign, awkward, fake or difficult?  Achor suggests starting with a daily list of “three good things.”  Take a few minutes each day to either write down or vocalize three good things about your day.
Why does this help?  Achor explains:
“When you write down a list of “three good things” that happened that day, your brain will be forced to scan the last 24 hours for potential positives—things that brought small or large laughs, feelings of accomplishment at work, a strengthened connection with family, a glimmer of hope for the future. In just five minutes a day, this trains the brain to become more skilled at noticing and focusing on possibilities for personal and professional growth, and seizing opportunities to act on them. At the same time, because we can only focus on so much at once, our brains push out those small annoyances and frustrations that used to loom large into the background, even out of our visual field entirely.”
When I began making the “good things list” part of my day, I noted that a lot of my “good things” revolved around food.  I like to eat!  Some days “good things” came to mind with ease and some days it was all about food or beautiful weather or a warm shower and a cozy bed.  Once, on a particularly stress-filled day, I couldn’t help but be grateful for a beautiful sunset as I drove home from the office.

Making Gratitude Part of Everyday Life

I began to practice my list-making with my husband and children – sometimes in the evening during our meal, or while bustling around the kitchen preparing to start our day. Occasionally, I vocalized “good things” one-on-one with my children while driving them to activities or with my husband over our weekly lunch date.  At first, I found it necessary to force myself into talking about good things from my day, but as time went on, it came more naturally to me.
Do I always have extremely positive days as a result?  No, I’m still an average human with highs and lows, stresses and accomplishments, frustrations and rewards.  Some days are better than others, to be certain.  But through this practice of gratitude-pattern building, I have found that in every situation and in everyday moments, there is always something good to be found.  Even if it happens to be the giant burger, I will eat for lunch!
__________
I invite you to begin the practice of listing at least 3 good things from each day.  Create a habit of completing this practice while doing another daily task.  List your positives while showering, during your commute, while eating dinner, before opening your email at the office, or as you prepare breakfast.  Choose a time of day that works for you and either write down or verbally vocalize specific items, people, and moments that you appreciated in the last 24 hours.
I’d love to hear how you’ve implemented this practice and your thoughts on its effectiveness in your life.  What changes have you noticed in your attitude?  Have you seen changes in those around you? Have you shared this practice with others and encouraged them to begin?

3 Things Thursday - Donuts, Flowers, and a Duck

1. When I go grocery shopping, occasionally I will pick up a dozen donuts.  We love +Macey's donuts. So yummy!  My favorite are the chocolate-covered, cream-filled ones.  I have yet to try the bacon maple syrup donuts.

2. A few weeks ago, Clara and I went to +Lowe's Home Improvement to get a new planter pot for my front porch.  We had a good time looking at the different flowers.

This was my favorite.

Clara liked this one the best.

3. Last week at our ward's Relief Society meeting.  We had a wonderful lesson on learning to receive answers to prayer.  To go along with the lesson, we planted flower seeds in terra cotta pots.  When we watered them, this watermark showed up on the pot of the person sitting next to me.  I think it looks just like a duck. What do you see?

First Weekend in February

After a bit of a rough start to our Saturday, we got chores completed.

I taught Jared and Isaac a little bit of piano and then listened to them practice.

Then we decided to head down to the gas station to get treats.  The kids all brought their money and bought their own.  I love to see what they pick to buy with their own money.  Apparently they all like sour gummy things, except Clara who opted for Swedish Fish (nasty!!)

I just got a drink.

Nathan worked all day Saturday and didn't get home until late, so unfortunately there aren't any pictures of him.

Once he was home and the kids were in bed, we got caught up +Downton Abbey - PBS Masterpiece Classic via Amazon Instant Video.  He always says he doesn't like those types of shows, but he always get sucked into them with me. :)

After church on Sunday, we headed over to Nathan's parent's house for our monthly family dinner.  Since it was also the Superbowl, dinner was little more casual than usual, but yummy nonetheless.

The game was boring and Jared and Isaac were bummed out that the Broncos didn't win.

I was there for the food, so I was happy!

Clara got bored also and spent her time taking pictures with my phone.  I ended up with these gems.

Fun Friday - Andy & Amy's Haunted House Video from the Ellen Show

This video pretty much made the rounds yesterday on Facebook, but it is too hilarious!

Just to warn you, there is bleeped language and fake gore.

A few of my favorite lines said by the guy:
"This it's stupid"
"Stop It, Stop it Now!!!"
"I'm a man and I'm going to hold you."
"I get it, they come out at you!"
"I'm not, I'm protecting you!"
"Why do people pay for that?"

Three Things Thursday

I've never heard of 3 Things Thursday either, but let's just go with it.

Numero Uno (#1 - for all of you non-Spanish speakers):  I am loving iOS 7.  I downloaded it promptly yesterday and really haven't had a ton of time to play on it, but what I have seen I really like.  Now I just need to convince that man I married to upgrade me to one my Numero Dos.

Numero Dos: Ladies and Gentlemen I proudly introduce you to the iPhone 5s Silver.  Isn't she pretty! She will be mine, oh yes, she will be mine.

Numero Tres: Last Sunday, my Mia Maid advisor shared a quote from Elder L. Tom Perry about how to learn to correct our speech if one is in the habit of swearing.  I wrote down the steps he listed and have been trying to practice them this week, not only with not swearing, but also with my tone of voice. Sometimes, I can come off more rough than necessary, especially with the people I love the most, my husband and children.  Elder Perry's formula works for that as well.  Here's the direct quote from the August 1986 New Era article, Thy Speech Reveals Thee:
To anyone who has followed the practice of using profanity or vulgarity and would like to correct the habit, could I offer this suggestion? First, make the commitment to erase such words from your vocabulary. Next, if you slip and say a swear word or a substitute word, mentally reconstruct the sentence without the vulgarity or substitute word and repeat the new sentence aloud. Eventually you will develop a non-vulgar speech habit.
This quote was also rerun in July 2007 in the Liahona Magazine, which you can find here, in a little different format.  I guess 21 years later, the wise leaders of our church still found his advice to be needed and true!
To anyone who has followed the practice of using profanity or vulgarity and would like to correct the habit, could I offer this suggestion?
  1. 1.
Make the commitment to erase such words from your vocabulary.
  1. 2.
If you slip and say a swear word or a substitute word, mentally reconstruct the sentence without the vulgarity or substitute word.
  1. 3.
    Repeat the new sentence aloud.
Eventually you will develop a nonvulgar speech habit.
I need to create a cute little .pdf poster with these steps on it, to hang up and remind me.  But that will be for another day!

Don't Believe Everything You See - Where Beauty Comes From

The other day I was bored, and decided to mess around with the photo editor on Google.  So I quickly snapped this picture of myself.

Then uploaded it to my Google+ account and started messing around with their software.

I ended up with this.

I am not a professional photo editor by any stretch of the imagination, but if I can take out under-eye bags and forehead wrinkles, remove the redness from my cheeks and nose, and make my complexion appear silky smooth, imagine what professionals can do with professional software.

Never mistake what you see in a magazine or online for reality!

Thinking about this reminded me of a talk I read recently for one of my lessons in young women's concerning beauty.  Watch this short video clip from that talk.

Things I Have Learned Driving on Cruise Control

Remember a while ago when I said that I had started to set my cruise control when driving on the freeway.

Well, I have observed and learned a few things about drivers by doing this.  I will share my knowledge with you as I am sure it is very important and you are dying to know.  As I cruise down the highway at an unchanging speed I have noticed:
  1. Most drivers slow down on curves.
  2. Most drivers slow down on hills, this includes going up overpasses.
  3. Most drivers accelerate going down hills, including going down an overpass.
  4. Most drivers slow down when they are talking on the phone.  This is followed by a momentary speed up when they realize they've slowed, but is inevitably followed by another slow down. - I actually just had an experience with this yesterday.  A man in a black IROCZ (It's a Camaro and reminded me of Dwight from the office... I know he has a Trans Am and it's not the same, but that is what it reminded me of), anyway, the man in the black IROCZ, cruised past me at a high rate of speed, not sure why I took note of him, but I did.  Less than a mile later I noticed that I was catching up to him and was going to pass him.  We were approaching an exit, so I thought maybe he was slowing down because he was going to exit, but he did not.  As I passed him, I noted that he was now talking on his phone.
  5. I won't even talk about people who are texting while driving.
Do with this information what you will!

a new perspective and mom's fridge quote

a few days after i wrote about struggling with my priorities, a friend of mine wrote this post called "I Am Not Dead".
go to raisinglemons.com to print a copy for yourself
after reading her post and reflecting on what i had written earlier, i realized that i'm okay.  i am down and bleeding after a BUSY month. it has certainly been alright for me to lie there and bleed.  now though, it's time for me to get back up and fight
.
her post also got me thinking about the quote on my mom's fridge that confused me while growing up.  the quote read
"Never try to teach a pig to sing.  It wastes your time and annoys the pig."
while this can be taken both literally and figuratively, i only understood it in the literal sense as a teenager.  as an adult i'm starting to see how this applies to me and my time and efforts.

the problem with teaching a pig to sing it that pigs don't sing!  they aren't supposed to sing.  that is not their purpose.

sometimes we may want another person to understand or know something that is either beyond their limits or beyond their abilities. sometimes we want to teach someone a skill that they don't have the maturity to grasp (thinking about my kids here).  other times we think that if a person just learned to do this or that, life would be so much easier for them. sometimes we want someone to change a habit or attitude that is inconvenient or is hurtful to us.

everyone has their own talents and skills.  while organizing might be easy for me, others struggle with it.  while others can craft and sew masterfully, i can't sew a straight line.

while most of the time i believe that intentions are good, you can't teach something to someone if they are unwilling and/or unable to learn it.  and besides, just because we think that someone should master that art of whatever-it-is we are thinking about, doesn't really mean that they should and we may not even be the most qualified person to teach them.

i wonder how many pigs i am trying to teach to sing right now.  people that i think i am trying to help, but really i am wasting my time and annoying them.  how much time and energy am i investing in wasted "pig singing lessons"?

i wonder how many people are trying to teach me to sing?

found this ecard here
Funny Reminders Ecard: Never try to teach a pig to sing. It only wastes your time and annoys the pig.

nights at the ball field where we run into friends and neighbors.

lazy sunday afternoons in the yard.

isaac helped clara for her first time on the see-saw

jared's thinking he's a little old for all this, but humored me for the picture.

my pretty girl swinging.

after swinging for a little while, we moved out to the front yard where we layed on blankets and waited for nathan to come home.  the sun was so nice!

driving on cruise control

literally... it's not just a catchy title.

it's a blury picture, but you get the idea.

about a month or so ago, i decided to start driving to work with the cruise control set to a speed between 70-72 miles per hour.  why would i decide to do such a strange thing?

  1. i like to drive faster than i should, setting the car on cruise takes that ability away from me. now that there are so many more lanes on the freeway people drive like it's the autobahn.  how fast is too fast, people?
  2. i don't want a speeding ticket.
  3. i save on gas.  seriously, take away all the speeding up and slowing down and you save $. i've been getting almost 15-20 more miles on a tank of gas.
  4. i'm more calm.  i don't feel like i'm in a rush anymore.  i wasn't in a rush before, but sometimes i felt like i was because i was going fast and always switching lanes.
  5. it's safer. and clearly, i'm all about safety :) i was super safe when i took the above picture while cruising down the road at 72.
i click on the cruise control on the on ramp and set it as soon as i am up to speed.  i've gotten pretty good at avoiding having to turn it off.  i know which lanes are usually good for me so that i'm not annoying anyone behind me and i'm not getting stuck behind someone slower in front of me.

probably the biggest reason for doing this and the best result is #4.  i need more calmness in my life and this works for me.

just some randomness - boots and mornings at our house

not really sure what i am looking at in the picture, but last night we went to CAL Ranch to see if we could find some boots for nathan and i.  he has been wanting some for a while and i would like some as well for all of the horse-back riding that i've been doing lately.... oh wait, i don't do that.

we didn't end up getting anything because neither of us city-slickers knows what boots are supposed to feel like when they fit you well.  so, i decided we would need to be more educated before we purchased anything.  we don't want huge blisters on our feet because we bought boots that don't fit well.

anyway, this is what my livingroom looks like weekday mornings between 5:30 am and 6:00 am.

yeah right!  if only they sat quietly with their arms folded when it was time for reverent things. they aren't perfect but they are great kids!  i am loving clara's face, amelia's bed-head and maybe it's time for me to buy some new pants for my boys?

happy friday!

The past week or so...

love it when I find stuff like this taped in random places.

this past saturday, nathan took the boys to the byu game.  jared got himself a new hat.

clara though that she needed to try on daddy's hat

nathan and i, along with the kids went to dinner with his parents.  the children were all crazy and i was happy to finally leave.

and just a random shot of myself in my office

date night

so because nathan and i live such exclusive and fabulous lives, we have amazing dates.

doesn't this look like a man who is up for some fun?

we went to kneaders for some yummy food before we headed off to the main event of our date..... grocery shopping! i spared you a picture of that.

and because we lead such exciting lives, sometimes we (meaning nathan) buy gigantic, hairy, nasty battery operated spiders while we are grocery shopping.  then when we get home to our nice quiet house where all of the children are asleep in their beds, we get the spider out of the box.

creep into our children's dark rooms and scar them for life.

so what do you do for fun?

32 days... that's over a month ya'll!

it has been over a month now since i've had any diet coke.  pretty pleased with myself. it hasn't been easy though.  there are 4 cans of the evil stuff still in my basement.  every time i go down there to get something from the cold storage they call for me.  i hurry and shut the door to silence their voices.  i have had some soda since i gave up the juice, but nothing with caffeine in it.  even then, the amount of soda that i have consumed the last month is very minimal.  i've been living on water!  imagine that, water and i am still alive!

i posted this on facebook, but i felt it worthy of another posting on my blog.  today while eating some reese's pieces, i tipped the bag to dump a few out and this is what occurred naturally:

how awesome is that?!  i didn't have to do my normal routine of separating and eating equal numbers!

my nemesis

i have a love-hate relationship with diet coke.  i love it, but i hate that i love it.  on sept 1, 2012, i intend to end this relationship for good.  i must fully admit here that i am a 1 can a day person - maybe 2 cans on a bad day so i know it shouldn't be that hard, but it seems a little daunting.

to prepare myself for the end of this relationship, i have googled "how to get off diet coke" several times and read other people's experiences with giving up the juice.  most people end up replacing their diet coke with something else, but i'm not convinced that's the route i want to take.

wish me luck and help keep me accountable!

cleaned up dog poo in the backyard.  i spared you a close up shot!

lunch

ran to checker to get an air filter for nathan and helped him change the oil in our cars

tried out some Turtle Wax T-240KT Headlight Lens Restorer Kit on my headlights.  worked awesome!  i tried to show half and half for comparison
more laundry...

nathan ordered dinner

then it was showers for the kids and bedtime.  all in all a pretty productive day!
