1st grade creative writing assignment

i think nathan and i need to work with isaac on creative thinking and imagination a little bit.

i was going through the boys' backpacks tonight to make sure everything was taken out of them. i came across some random halloween items and then came across isaac's thanksgiving creative writing assignment.

nathan and i couldn't stop laughing! i am sure that he read the prompt and just thought... "well duh!" and that was the end of that!

aunt erma

a couple of months ago we went to a carter family reunion. my dad's aunt was there, aunt erma who is 91 years old. She'll be 92 in December.

shortly after arriving, i went over to say hi to her. our conversation went something like this...

me: hi aunt erma. how are you doing?
aunt erma: i'm doing fine. *pause* you're hair is so long and pretty. do you have a lot of breakage?
me: **i wanted to laugh so hard, but i was able to contain myself** yeah, it's hard to keep it healthy.

i'll post a picture of her if i can find one.

jared's baptism

this past saturday, october 10th jared and his cousin ethan were baptized. it was really neat for both of them to be baptized the same day and together.

nathan, jared, shane and ethan
ethan and jared all ready to go!
ethan and jared looking so handsome.
nathan and jared waiting to get started.
it is hard to believe that we are already baptising our kids. it seems like time has passed so quickly. i am very happy that jared chose to be baptized.

a first time double-bloody nose

so sad!!! amelia fell 3/4 of the way down our stairs on saturday and in the process gave herself a bloody nose on both sides. nate made her some nose plugs and she was all good!

yesterday's funny

nathan and i went to parent teacher conferences last night for the boys. jared's teacher told us that he and a girl in the class get along quite well and that they hang out all the time.

when we got home, nathan asked jared if he liked her. jared's reply.... "Dad, I don't know what it is... I just like girls who look good."

Oh boy... i think we need to work with him on what's on the inside is important too.

finally a picture from flag football

not the kind i would like to share, but...

WARNING - graphic content

in the last 3 minutes of this past saturday's game, jared grabbed his 4th flag. all was fine until i heard that man sitting next to us yell, "coach you've got an injury". I turned my attention to where the injured player was and here comes jared with blood all over his face.

at first i thought he had gotten a bloody nose, but there wasn't any blood below his nose, it was just everywhere else and gushing down his chin. Once we got him over to us we could see that it was his lower lip, but blood was everywhere so we couldn't see how bad it really was. i ran to our truck and grabbed the first aid kit. we used almost all of the wipes in the kit to get his face cleaned up. the bite marks in his lip were pretty substantial, but we weren't sure whether he would need stitches and we really didn't want to go to the ER unnecessarily.

i remembered that our pediatrician's office is open for a few hours on saturdays and so i called and they told us to bring him in and get it looked at. when we got there and they determined that he would need stitches, we were given the option of having them do the stitches there or to go over to the hospital to have the stitches put in there. the doc said that the benefit of going to the hospital to get it done was that they could give him some pain medication to calm him before they gave him the shots. we really didn't want to go over to the hospital so i told jared it was going to hurt a bit and i asked him if he could be really brave.

i was so proud of him!!! he didn't cry while we were at the game. he didn't cry at the doctor's office when the doctor was cleaning it out. best of all, he didn't cry when the doctor's gave him 8 shots in his lip - he didn't even move a muscle even though i could tell he wanted to scream! the doctor said that he was the bravest boy he had ever seen. long story short, he ended up getting four stitches. one in the right hand mark and three in the other.

btw - he got defensive player of the game for all the flags he pulled!

this picture is post stitches. we took some pre-stitches pictures with nate's phone, so i'll post those later.

flag football

i wish i had pictures to share, but i don't.

the boys are playing flag football right now and love it. at first we were a little concerned about issac, he wasn't aggressive at all, in fact, when he had the ball he ran slowly so he "wouldn't run into anyone". jared has always been aggressive on the field so we knew he was good.

we decided to have a little chat with isaac, that in football you should try to avoid people when you have the football, but you needed to run really fast so that they don't get you and if they do get in your way you need to plow them over. to drive the point home, we had him watch the next byu game. every time someone ran with the ball we pointed out how they ran fast and mowed people over.

we wondered whether he got the point. well, this past saturday while he was playing safety. (safety is the guy who stands a ways back from the line of scrimmage to make sure the runner doesn't get to the goal.) so the guy running with the ball gets past everyone on the line and is heading straight for the goal line - only isaac would be able to stop him. at this point nathan is beside himself yelling "get him isaac, get him!" making us so proud, isaac squared up his shoulders, quickly got over to the runner and grabbed the flag! he got the award for defensive player of the game!

we were also so proud of jared also. a little later in the game, he made his first touchdown of the season!!

way to go boys!!

mormoms... really???

i have to write about a funny phone conversation i had at work yesterday. for those of you who don't know, i work for a company that manages name lists. people come to us when they want to send their marketing piece to people with certain criteria.

anyway, this NY guy emails me and he wants to know if we have a list of mormoms (sic) in california. i respond that yes, we have 3 different files that contain mormons in CA. i gave him the names of the 3 files, one starts with the word "mormon" and the other two start with"lds". i also sent over documents that describe who's on the list, how much it costs to rent it, etc.

he calls me a little while later and says that he is mostly interested in the file that started with "mormon" because "the other two don't sound like we can be sure that they are mormons." before i can even respond, he says that for one of the lists, he looked up their website and "there is a black man on the front of their catalog and so i am thinking that the people on this file are baptist."

i seriously almost burst out laughing!!! i explained to him that "lds" is the more correct term for the members of the religion than "mormon", so he could be sure that the other two files also contained mormons as well and not baptists....

catch up with us

what is going down in harwood town...

nathan: he's a few weeks into a new semester at uvu. he's taking classes at the north utah valley center in lehi, which is awesome because it cuts off about 40 minutes of his previous classes due to driving time.

wendy: i'm living the same life on different days. i'm okay with it though. getting back into the school year was a little challenging with the kids, so a routine is just fine right now.

jared: he's in 2nd grade now and loves school. he is growing so much emotionally and i find that i rely upon him more to take care of things for himself and his bro and sis.

isaac: in the 1st grade. i'm not really sure how he feels about school. he says he likes it, but it's not very convincing. he does like to eat lunch at school and he and jared usually sit together.

amelia: she just started preschool last week. she seems so little to me compared to all of the other kids i've seen being dropped off. it's probably just me. i am worried that nathan and i have created a monster with this one. she is so spoiled.

that's all i got right now!

i read on another blog about the lowe's build and grow clinics. they are free and so i thought it was a perfect opportunity to interact with the kids and teach them new skills. here we are making boats.

a picture of shane and roni and the kids on the same day.

a random photo

nathan took this picture of me after he got a new lens for his camera. i was rinsing off dishes and he started snapping some shots. then i of course had to stand there for what felt like a half hour while he took a billion shots. out of the billion he took, he liked this one the best.
