Towards the end of October, Nathan and I took off for a trip to Mexico. We were supposed to be going to Puerto Vallarta, but at the last minute Hurricane Patricia changed our plans and instead we flew to Cancun. We had a blast nonetheless.
We took a red-eye flight to Atlanta and had a few hours layover. That's the perfect moment for an airport selfie.
Once we made it to Cancun, we found our shuttle and started the drive to the Barcelo Maya Resort. Nathan and the shuttle driver spoke and chatted in Spanish for most of the hour and 20 minute drive. I understood a couple of words. Most of the time I looked like this:
Once we arrived at the hotel, we checked in and found a place to eat. We were pretty tired, so we basically just went to bed.
The next morning, I snapped a couple of picture from our balcony. Yeah, we had a hammock on our balcony.
We stayed in Mexico for 10 days. We spent a lot of time exploring the resort, eating yummy food and of course we took some most excellent selfies!
We played mini golf and got soaked with sweat from the heat and humidity.
And I got Nathan to pose for pictures at dinner one night.
Of course we spent time in the water, both the pool and the ocean.
We also spent a day at a place called Xplor. We had a lot of fun! Nathan and I took turns driving little side by side ATVs through the jungle and through underground cenotes.
These pictures didn't turn out because of the darkness, but we swam through an underground river. We were also able to kayak in another part of the underground river.
This is looking up at the point where you finish the underground river. At the very top of this sinkhole opening is a tower for one of the 9 zipline runs.
We also ziplined. This is standing on the top of the tower from the picture above.
After ziplining we got some refreshment and relaxed for a bit.
I hit myself in the eye while ziplining so that I would have a souvenir of the event. This is a shot of the initial damage. You can kind of see it has started to swell just below my eyebrow.
A couple of days later.
We also visited some of the Mayan ruins on the Yucutan Peninsula. First we visited Chitchen Itza.
Then we went to Coba, where we were able to climb to the top of one of the temples.
After going to church in Playa Del Carmen, we went to Tulum.
There were tons of Iguanas all over our resort grounds and the places we went to visit.
At Tulum, I fed one a hydrangea flower and some bread.
We celebrated my birthday while we were there and the resort decorated for Dia De Los Muertos.
We also watched the moon come up several nights over the water. Very cool.
We had a great time! Thank you Nathan for surprising me with such an awesome birthday/anniversary present. I loved every minute I got to spend with you!
